Lawmaker Makes a Move to Avoid Another School Debacle

Posted: Updated:

In the wake of the legal mess the Washoe School District has gotten itself into, at least one Legislator is making a move to tighten up the power school boards have in Nevada.

Nevada Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey today said he has heard from a number of civic leaders who are requesting he sponsor a bill examining the power school boards should or shouldn't have. So he has asked the Legislative Counsel Bureau to draft the bill.

The Washoe School Board this past week met behind closed doors and took action to dismiss its Superintendent. That brought a lawsuit for breach of contract and for a violation of Nevada's Open Meeting Law. And that sparked a second lawsuit from the Board defending it's action. Both of those lawsuits are moving forward even though the Superintendent is back at work.
