Child Accidentally Shoots Himself in South Lake Tahoe

Posted: Updated:
South Lake Tahoe Police report that a mentally handicapped child accidentally shot himself on Thursday, July 31st.

Police say that just after 4 p.m. officers were called to the Staples parking lot at 2061 Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe on reports of a shooting. When they arrived they found a 10-year-old boy who had shot himself in the hand. Police say the boy is believed to be autistic.

The child was then taken to Barton Memorial Hospital to be treated for his wound. His injuries are not life threatening.

An investigation determined the boy was taken on a shopping trip by his grandparents, and was briefly left alone in a parked car. That's where he found the loaded pistol in an unlocked glove box, and shot himself.

The boy's grandfather is legally allowed to carry a loaded firearm, but police are still reviewing pressing child endangerment charges.
