Reno, NV—

On Thursday, July 31, 2014 detectives from the Regional Street Enforcement Team (SET) conducted an underage alcohol compliance operation at several Reno convenience/liquor stores. Several of the businesses were checked in response to citizen’s complaints to the Reno police department about alcohol being sold to minors and/or previous failures during a similar operation.

Two 20 year old and three 19 year old volunteers attempted to purchase alcohol at twenty two different locations. Seventeen of those businesses refused to sell alcohol to the minors, while five sold alcohol to the minors.

The following locations were checked and PASSED the compliance check by refusing to sell alcohol to the minors:

-Shop N Go located at 641 E. Moana Ln.

-Kahn & Sons located at 2005 Sierra Highlands Dr.

-Royal Market located at 6380 Mae Ann Ave.

-Jackson’s located at 600 N. Wells Ave.

-7-11 located at 690 E. 2nd St.

-Sam and Son Market located at 895 S. Virginia St

-Discount Food and Liquor located at 600 S. Virginia St.

-Quicke Mart#2 located at 777 S. Virginia St.

The Reno police department would like to thank those businesses who passed this operation for their diligence in ensuring only individuals of legal age are sold alcohol.

The following businesses FAILED the operation and were issued citation(s) for the listed charges:

-7-11 located at 1770 Sutro St. – Sales of alcohol to a minor

-Speedway Market located at 1400 E. Peckham Ln. – Sales of alcohol to a minor

-Corner Mini Mart located at 1775 Mill St. – Sales of alcohol to a minor

-Sharma Mart located at 504 Denslowe Dr. – Sales of alcohol to a minor

As is the case in all alcohol compliance checks, the minors possessed their actual state issued identifications which clearly identified them as being under the age of 21. If asked by the employees for identification, the volunteers provided their real identification.

This compliance check was funded entirely by federal grant funds which were secured by our community partner; Join Together Northern Nevada (JTNN).

The Reno police department and JTNN would like to extend our appreciation and publicly recognize all of the passing businesses.

The Reno police department, the City of Reno, and Join Together Northern Nevada have worked closely with local businesses to create a partnership while educating employees about the dangers in serving or selling alcohol to minors.

Serving alcohol to a minor and allowing a minor into a saloon are both misdemeanors, with a pre-designated fine of $500.00.
