Lyon County Deputies Warn of Phone Scam Involving IRS

Posted: Updated:
From Lyon County Sheriff's Office:

Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is reporting telephone scams involving people claiming to be IRS agents.

Victims have reported to Lyon County deputies they received phone calls from a male subject claiming to be from the IRS. He told the victims there was an issue with their taxes and they needed to pay back taxes in lieu of being arrested. He told the victims to get money on pre-paid cash cards and scratch off the back giving him the pin number for payment. Several hundred dollars were taken from the victims.

The IRS does not take money over the phone by pre-paid cards. If there are questions about a person’s taxes, they can contact the IRS office in Reno at 775-824-2218, or online at www.irs.gov.

If anyone has information on similar cases, please contact the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at 775-463-6600.
