Motorcycle Rider Dies of Injuries Suffered in I-80 Crash Near Wells Avenue

Posted: Updated:
Nevada Highway Patrol says a motorcycle rider critically injured in an accident last week on I-80 near Wells Avenue has died of his injuries.

Investigators say the driver of a Toyota tried to avoid rear-ending another vehicle and ended up hitting a PT Cruiser, which struck rider, 59-year-old Kevin J. Ness of Oakland. Ness was thrown from the bike.

Troopers say the chain of events happened when the driver of a silver-blue 1989 Toyota Camry, driven by 62-year-old Harry D. Preston of Corning, California, swerved to avoid colliding with the vehicle ahead that allegedly slowed for congested traffic.

Troopers say Preston didn’t see the white 2007 PT Cruiser in the adjacent lane that was driven Robert K. Brackett of Ukiah, California, causing the two vehicles to collide. Brackett’s vehicle traveled into the adjacent lane where it hit Ness’ motorcycle.

Troopers say Ness died Sunday night at Renown Regional Medical Center.

Troopers closed three of the eastbound lanes for about two hours while they investigated the accident.

Trooper Doug Farris is investigating this tragic event. Witnesses or anyone with additional information about this event are encouraged to contact him at (775) 689-4614 or dfarris@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-140702711.
