A 1,400 acre wildfire burning in western Elko County is currently 20% contained.

The Bootstrap Fire started just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday between the Rossi and Meikle Mines in western Elko County.  The BLM says smoke from the fire affected the ventilation system and caused an evacuation of Barrick’s underground operations. Crews are evaluating air quality to determine if operations can proceed.

The BLM says crews are protecting the mine and preserving unburned islands and sage grouse habitat.

NV Energy crews are examining burned poles.

Nearly 200 personnel are currently working the fire.

There’s no immediate word on a cause or when the wildfire will be fully contained.
