Ronny Cedeno was 4-for-5 with 4 RBIs and Lucas Harrell threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings to lead the Aces to a series-opening 7-3 win over the Fresno Grizzlies Tuesday night.
Cedeno had hits in his first four at-bats, including his first home run with the Aces in the seventh inning.
Fresh off of Charles Brewer’s eight shutout innings in the Aces 6-0 win Monday night, Harrell tossed 6 2/3 scoreless innings of his own. Reno pitchers went 19 innings without allowing a run before Fresno plated three runs in the ninth.
A long two-out rally gave the Aces a comfortable lead in the third inning. Andy Marte’s single and back-to-back walks issued to Mike Jacobs and Aaron Cunningham set the stage. Bobby Wilson struck out but a wild pitch allowed him to reach and Marte to trot home with the first run of the night.
Cedeno followed with a two-run single to left-field to give the Aces a 3-0 edge. Argenis Diaz came up next and delivered another run-scoring base hit to up the lead to 4-0.
Meanwhile, Harrell didn’t allow a hit until Adalberto Santos hit a bloop single to start the bottom of the fourth. He came back and got Brett Krill to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play, quickly thwarting a rally.
Working in his first game since taking a line-drive off the head in a start in Sacramento on July 11, Harrell yielded only three hits and picked up his fifth win of the year.
Cedeno’s third hit of the night drove in his third run. With the bases loaded he lined a base hit up the middle to score Jacobs to give Reno a 5-0 lead in the fifth.
His home run came with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. It’s Cedeno’s first four-hit game and four-RBI game since joining the Aces on June 30.
Garrett Weber and Andy Marte added multi-hit games for Reno, and Blake Cooper worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Game two of the series is set for Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park. Right-hander Mark Serrano (2-0, 4.60) starts for the Aces against right-hander Chris Heston (9-5, 3.67) for the Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
