Sparks Firefighters Practice on Donated Building

Posted: Updated:
This week firefighters with the Sparks Fire Department are practicing their skills on a building donated to the fire department.

Firefighters are practicing ventilating the roof of a structure, rescuing someone from a simulated structure fire, and conducting a forcible entry exercise at this property on Fourth Street.

The structure was given to the department by Silver Sage Manor, which will demolish it to start developing a senior housing complex next week.

“We're constantly training but it's fairly infrequent that we get a property owner willing to donate a building to us so that we can do this type of destructive training on it,” says Chris Maples, Training Chief, Sparks Fire Department

Firefighters also say practicing on this building is better than their training tower because it's unfamiliar to them, just like a real home would be.
