The boat ramp at Sand Harbor is now closed to power boats for the remainder of the summer season due to low water levels at Lake Tahoe. Nevada State Parks supervisor Jay Howard says people can still carry kayaks and other small boats down the ramp, but large boats will have to use another boat launch. “The last time the lake was this low was 2008 or 2009,” said Howard. “So it's been 5-6 years since we've had to close this ramp early," he continued.
Officials say they had to close the boat ramp to protect boats and to protect the end of the boat ramp from damage.
The parking lot will remain open and on Monday there were hundreds of people enjoying the beaches and the water. “This part gets a million people a year that come here, and the vast majority-- about 80% -- are in these busiest months of June, July and August,” said Howard.
You can still launch power boats at the Cave Rock boat launch which is about 16 miles south of Sand Harbor.
