Business Leaders Consider Action Against School Board Trustees

Posted: Updated:
Business leaders involved with the Committee on Excellence in Education for the Washoe County School District are meeting to discuss the situation between school district trustees and their superintendent.

"Other members have requested a meeting today to talk about it," said Perry Di Loreto by phone moments ago.

Di Loreto was on the panel of community members who met as part of the Latino Leadership Roundtable Saturday morning in Reno. And during his address to the crowd there he did mention the possibility of a recall of elected officials.

No petitions for such action have been filed with the Washoe Registrar of Voters as of noon today. They say it would take 25% of the voter turnout (in the election when a public official is elected to office) to recall them. And they estimate that would take about 2,000 signatures for each of the trustees if in fact a petition is filed. And the petitioner would have 90 days to collect them.

"It's possible," said Deanna Spikula, Senior Deputy at the Registrar of Voters Office in Washoe County. "But the timeline is extremely short and there are a lot of variables involved with verifying signatures. So I'd say it is a possibility but it's unlike that anyone or any group could get that all done in time to add to the November ballot."

We'll be talking with Di Loreto later this afternoon and will have the full story on tonight's Channel 2 News at 5pm.
