Henderson OKs deal to house 'Safe Strip' detainees

Posted: Updated:

HENDERSON, Nev. (AP) - Officials have approved using the Henderson municipal jail to house some misdemeanor offenders arrested during weekends on the Las Vegas Strip.

The Henderson City Council on Tuesday approved a summer-season contract with Clark County under what officials call the "Safe Strip Initiative."

Henderson gets about $102 per day for the first two days each detainee is held, and about $112 per day after the third day.

Deputy Las Vegas Police Chief Todd Fasulo told the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/1r4tFWJ) the lower rate stems from the short 24-to-48 hour stay for detainees arrested Friday and Saturday nights.

Fasulo says the cross-jurisdictional program sends up to 50 detainees per weekend to the 540-bed Henderson Detention Center.

Meanwhile, the Clark County jail in downtown Las Vegas is undergoing a four-year, $88 million renovation.
