Donating blood can save up to three lives, but very few of us do it. United Blood Services says only 5% of Northern Nevadans give blood.
“Everyone is nervous that it's gonna hurt.”
Yes, because there's blood - and needles... and that's what most of us are worried about.
“I was really afraid of needles. That's why the first time I decided to do it - to get over my fear of that.”
So, there is one little pin prick in the beginning - but it hurts way less than getting shot. And if you're a real chicken, like me - you can look away when it's needle time.
19-year-old Christine Koski got over her fear of needles and three years ago started donating blood and plasma on a regular basis. “It feels good to help out and donate something that can be made to help people that need it
“We have hospital patients in our community that need blood transfusions for elective or trauma surgeries and it's important that we have that blood on the shelf.”
Donor Recruitment Director Steve Thomas says UBS is in need of all blood types right now. But if you're still hesitant about sitting in the donor chair, phlebotomist DJ Devine has a few suggestions. “Get the first one out of the way, that's the worst one. You know, come hydrated, eat a good meal, make sure you prepare yourself as well as you can.”
The whole process from check in and paperwork to recovery time - takes only 45 minutes. Karen Prouty has been donating blood since she was a college student. “And it's the one thing you can feel you're volunteering without giving up too much time.”
“Just get that first one out of the way, then you’ll know what to expect and you can continue to donate and save a lot of lives.”
We're hosting our annual "Give 2 Live" Blood Drive at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Monday, July 21.
You can fill out the health history questionnaire online ahead of time the day of the drive. That way you can jump the line and donate faster. Just go to https://edhq.unitedbloodservices.org/. There will also be computers on site if you’d like to fill out the questionnaire there.
