SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Former Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff says the bribery charges leveled against him are completely false and motivated by a politically charged investigation.

Shurtleff spoke during a news conference Monday afternoon at his attorney's office. He accused Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill in engaging in political sideshow antics for his own political gain.

Gill, a Democrat, has defended the investigation. He points to cooperation from a Republican county attorney, the state department of public safety and the FBI as evidence that inquiry is not politically motivated.

The 56-year-old Shurtleff, a Republican, recognized making errors in judgment during his tenure in office but he says he never broke any state laws.

Shurtleff was charged Monday with 10 counts that include bribery. Former attorney general John Swallow was also charged with bribery.
