2 get prison time in slaying of Vegas gang rival

Posted: Updated:

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Two accused gang members were sentenced to four to 10 years in prison in the April 2010 shooting of a gang rival at a downtown Las Vegas motel.

A judge on Monday called 19-year-old DeShun L. Burley's death senseless and unnecessary, and the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/1kZY0zJ ) that Burley's mother, Karen Merritt-Greene, called his death the hardest thing she had to face in her life.

Clark County District Court Judge Valerie Adair sentenced 27-year-old Damien Benoit and 25-year-old Brandon Bailey following their guilty pleas to voluntary manslaughter.

The pleas in May avoided trial, and prosecutors agreed to drop murder and weapon charges.

Authorities say Benoit and Bailey were Piru Bloods, and Burley was a Crips member.

Police say Burley and Bailey argued about Bailey dating Burley's sister.
