Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Says Grill Safety is Key

Posted: Updated:
Nothing quite says summer like grilling and barbecuing, but the Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District wants to make sure people grill safely.

“We see a lot of burns as a result of unattended grills or barbecues,” said Fire Marshall Amy Ray, “or even people running into them and just not paying attention.”

She says their agency has responded to a couple grill-related fires recently and now is a good time to remind Northern Nevadans.

“It’s becoming more prevalent during the summer,” said Ray. “People do more outdoor grilling and cooking during the summer.”

The agency recommends the following:

·         Keep your pets and kids at least three feet away from the grill

·         Make sure you barbecue outdoors

·         Keep the grill clean by removing grease and fats

·         Check hoses and valves of gas grills

“It can create a fire if the fittings are not done correctly,” said Ray.

It is also important to be aware of current fire conditions.

“It’s very hot and it’s very dry,” said Ray. “We have  high winds so it is important to be aware and to be fire safe.”
