LA County deputy was texting before fatal crash

Posted: Updated:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Court documents say a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was texting shortly before his patrol car struck and killed a bicyclist.

The Los Angeles Daily News (http://bit.ly/1jssSxy ) reports Monday that cellphone records indicate Deputy Andrew Wood sent six text messages from his personal phone before his car struck Milton Olin Jr. in Calabasas on Dec. 8.

However it's not clear whether he was texting at the precise time of the crash.

The 65-year-old Olin - a lawyer and former CEO of Napster - died at the scene.

The cellphone records were submitted to a court in May.

The Daily News says Wood, a 16-year veteran, declined to comment.

Olin's family has filed a negligent and reckless driving claim against the county and could sue if the claim is rejected.
