Hot Jobs Get Even Hotter in this Heat

Posted: Updated:
So you think you are hot. Think about all those people who work all day long in the heat.

We caught up with a crew of roofers in East Reno Monday morning. Not only was it already hot out, they have to wear protective gear no matter what the temperature is.

"They have to wear long sleeves and jeans and hats and they carry a lot of tools and that is all heavy to move around in," said Hunter Heidrich with Scott Roofing.

"And we all need to wear a harness too because if you get dizzy or something it keeps you safe," adds the foreman, Juan Gonzales.

Just down the road we found Rebecca Deshaies who has worked on road crews as a flagger since 1994. She had a few tricks up her sleeves.

"You gotta bring a lot of water and a lot of ice. See this scarf around my neck? I soak it in ice water every couple of hours and it really does help keep me cool,"she said. She also said that most people don't realize just how hot her job is.

"The new asphalt is 350 degrees and it reflects the heat back at us. That's like baking cookies. We are like out here in heavy boots to protect our feet but we really are baking."

And talk about frying in this heat. William Macieo works in the kitchen at Pizza Plus. He says the ovens are always on and the fryers are always on and it's just always hot in the kitchen.

"Especially when you cut the pizza," he says. "Because then you are caught between the ovens and the warmer and it's like you're trapped between two really hot things."

Even in this heat they are all happy to have jobs. The other thing they all agreed on was that you have to drink a lot of water, no matter what your job is.
