The Nevada Highway Patrol has identified the bicyclist and semi-truck driver involved in Thursday morning’s accident inside Cave Rock in Douglas County.

Troopers say 39-year-old Richard J. Pettay of Carson City and bicyclist, 48-year-old Clarence M. Aldridge of Bakersfield were both heading east on Highway 50 in the right lane and entered the tunnel with Pettay’s semi-truck following Aldridge.

For some unknown reason, troopers say Pettay did not see Aldridge and the front of his semi-truck hit the rear of Aldridge’s bicycle. Aldridge was thrown from his bike and suffered serious injuries.  Aldridge was flown by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center.

Pettay exited the tunnel and stopped. Troopers say he’s cooperating with the investigation.

Troopers say alcohol and/or drugs are not involved. There is also no bike lane inside the two-lane tunnel and the speed limit is 35 miles per hour.

Troopers  say charges are pending in this accident, but so far have not released any further details.

Trooper Chris Kelly of the Nevada Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the accident. Witnesses or anyone else with more information can reach out to him at (775) 689-4661 or ckelly@dps.state.nv.us  regarding case number NHP-140700874
