Tons of pot seized in California traffic stop

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) - Police in Central California say they seized more than 3 tons of marijuana after pulling over the driver of a U-Haul who ran a red light.

Bakersfield police Sgt. Joe Grubbs says two officers smelled marijuana during the traffic stop early Wednesday, and a police dog alerted them to something inside.

Grubbs says the officers cut the lock and found 252 bales of marijuana wrapped in plastic weighing nearly 7,000 pounds.

The 22-year-old driver, Daniel Ruiz, and his passenger, 24-year-old Jose Alcarez, were booked into jail on suspicion of possession and transportation of marijuana for sale.

It was not immediately clear whether they had attorneys.

Grubbs says this was the department's largest bust in recent memory. The drugs have been destroyed.
