New Back Surgery

Posted: Updated:
A scar is all that's left from year's worth of agony. John Caulk suffered daily pain that left his left hand numb. "I had pain that radiated from the shoulder to the inside of the bicep, rolled up over the forearm."

John finally ended up at Dr. Michael Song's office, Advanced Neurosurgery. He was diagnosed with cervical discs causing spinal chord and nerve root compression. Traditional surgery was the first option. "The standard procedure involves removing the disc and putting in a plate which takes away motion at that level and can cause excess motion to occur above and below and 20% of the time patients may need surgery at the level above and below."

But timing is everything and Dr. Song was just recently trained in a cutting edge new surgery called Mobi-C that was perfect for John. Instead of putting a plate between two vertebrae, Dr. Song performed a two level cervical disc replacement - the first in northern Nevada. The benefits are huge. "The nice thing about this surgery is we can do this radical surgery. It takes less than two hours and patients can go home in less than a day. And the FDA studies show 20 days closer to getting back to work."

John is a sheet metal worker. Ten days post surgery and he's back to work. And his neck is moving comfortably in all directions. "He's able to bend his neck forward and achieve a nice flexion and bend his neck backward to achieve nice extension. So that should minimize the wear and tear at the level above and below." And minimize his need for a future surgery.
