LAWNDALE, Calif. (AP) - The board of a small Southern California school district has voted to fire its superintendent, five months after it was revealed his pay was higher than the president of the United States

The Daily Breeze (http://bit.ly/1oiiZib) reports that the Centinela Valley Union High School District's board voted 5-0 in closed session Tuesday night to fire Jose Fernandez, whose annual salary exceeded $674,000.

The newspaper reported the salary in February, prompting outrage among parents and teachers. Fernandez had been on leave for investigation since April.

Fernandez oversaw three high schools in the Los Angeles suburbs of Hawthorne and Lawndale consisting of about 6,600 students.

Los Angeles Schools Superintendent John Deasy, who oversees more than 1,000 schools with more than 640,000 students, and President Obama are each paid about $400,000 a year.
