Road Crews Make Progress on Mt. Rose Project

Posted: Updated:
If you had the chance to travel on the Mt. Rose Highway this weekend, you may have wondered where the construction crews were. They took the three day weekend off, but Monday crews were back, working on a $10 million project.

Last Thursday, the paving of the lower part of the highway was completed. Crews tore up and replaced 300,000 square yards of old asphalt and replaced it in just 15 days, a full month ahead of schedule.

“(That is) a lot of work done in a short amount of time,” said Meg Ragonese with the Nevada Department of Transportation. “Crews are hard at work on the project, getting it wrapped up as quickly as possible and as efficiently as possible.”

New guardrails have been installed, with plans to fix rumble strips and improve erosion control along the summit.

NDOT says motorists can expect delays as long as 30 minutes as the construction continues. However, a lot of work will be done during the evening to reduce the traffic impact.

“(It will) really help the daytime commute,” said Ragonese. “There will be still some day work but the focus now will be on evening construction.”

The project continues throughout the summer and into early fall. Crews will take a break during winter before completing the construction next summer.
