2 Apartments Destroyed in Fire on Spring Meadows Drive

Posted: Updated:

2 apartments were destroyed and several house pets killed in an apartment fire on Saturday afternoon.

The Sparks Fire Department says that just after 1 p.m. firefighters were called to a building on fire in the 500 block of Spring Meadows Drive.

When firefighters arrived, they found an 8 unit apartment complex on fire. Before the fire was contained, 2 of the apartments were fully engulfed in flame, and 2 more were moderately damaged by fire. The fire also spread to a shed on a nearby property.

One pet dog and two cats were killed in the fire. One child who lived in the building was treated for smoke inhalation by REMSA, but was released on scene and did not have to be hospitalized. A firefighter also had to be removed from the building and treated for heat exhaustion

Fire officials say they are unsure if any of the residents of the building will be able to live in the complex. A building inspector will be called to see if the unburned apartments are safe to inhabit. In the meantime the Red Cross is supporting the families who lost their homes in the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
