Star Spangled Sparks Fireworks Delayed By an Hour

Posted: Updated:
Thousands packed the Sparks streets to check out the annual tradition of fireworks on top of the Nugget's two towers and on a rail cart.

But, there was about an hour delay due to wind. Fire officials said the winds needed to be consistently under 15 MPH before they can safely shoot off the fireworks.

But, many say it was well worth the wait. The crowd was dazzled with all the different fireworks going off in all kinds of colors.

“Each show has its unique story line,” said Bryan Leiran, a designer of the show. “You are painting a picture in the sky. You compliment it with the music and the audio.”

There were 15,000 firework shells, totaling about 5,000 pounds, according to Leiran. The show is lasted about 20 minutes.

Crews spent part of Thursday putting the final touches on this year’s show. It has taken them the last five or so days to actually construct the firework shows.

Nugget’s President and CEO Carlton Geer says this year was his first fireworks show as the man in charge, and he was excited for the show, especially because they are becoming more rare across the nation.

“With fireworks shows, the number has gone down because of regulatory concerns, or fire department concerns, or pure cost concerns,” said Geer. “So the fact that we can continue doing this? I’m thrilled.”
