Governor Sandoval Declares July BEAR Logic Month

Posted: Updated:
If you want to help keep bears safe from urban sprawl, start thinking like one. Governor Brian Sandoval and the Nevada Department of Wildlife want you just to use Bear Logic. So they've declared this Bear Logic Month.

"Trash is the number one attractant for bears," said Teresa Moiola, who is an education coordinator for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. "So we're asking people to secure their trash. Don't put it out earlier than you need to and if you live in an urban interface get a bear-proof container."

Over the next month NDOW will run an education campaign informing the youngest to the oldest residents that they need to help keep bears in the woods.

Meantime, game biologist Carl Lackey was on patrol in Incline Village and picked up an 8-year-old black bear trying to get into trash. And it wasn't his first encounter with her.

"We picked her up in 2009 and we've given her a new ear tag. You can tell by her teeth that she's a little worn down but basically she's healthy and we want to keep her that way. Which means keeping her away from trash and away from people."

They'll release her outside of Incline Village Wednesday morning. And they hope they don't see her again.

The best advice if you do encounter a bear, is to contact the Nevada Department of Wildlife immediately. Call (775) 688-BEAR. And for more tips and information go to http://www.ndow.org/Nevada_Wildlife/Bear_Logic/
