Man Accused of Writing Bad Checks to Local Charities

Posted: Updated:
A man is facing a pair of felony charges, after allegedly writing bad checks to local charities on purpose.

The Washoe County District Attorney's office says 43-year-old Scott Lyda opened a checking account, then withdrew all but $1.

After that, investigators say he wrote several checks for items at charity auctions, despite no funds being available.

Officials believe the charities involved include the Nevada Diabetes Association and the Rotary Central Club.

Lyda is charged with obtaining money under false pretenses, and passing checks without sufficient funds...both felonies.

He is also being held for a probation violation, tied with a previous attempted grand larceny charge.
