23,000-Plus Take Steps to Get Nevada Driver Cards

Posted: Updated:
Officials say more than 23,000 Nevada residents have taken steps since January to obtain a driver authorization card.

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles told the Las Vegas Review-Journal (http://bit.ly/1voeB58 ) that as of June 11, almost 16,400 people received a card, granted to immigrants who aren't eligible for a regular driver's license.

Just under 6,700 picked up authorization card permit instructions.

DMV spokesman Kevin Malone says an initial rush of applicants in January has subsided. Some officials think as many as 60,000 people could be eligible to apply for the Nevada cards. The state has more than 2.75 million residents.

Officials say there's no way to know if people who now have driver authorization cards had insurance before or after obtaining them.
