Local Teamsters Union Continue to Negotiate Transit Contract

Posted: Updated:
A local Teamsters Union continues to negotiate the area’s transit contract with MV Transportation. The current two-year contract expires on Monday.

Local 533 has represented the drivers of the RTC bus system and RTC Access paratransit and support personnel for a quarter-century.

Local 533 President Gary Watson says, “We expect to mutually agree to an extension and to conclude negotiations soon. As a normal part of the process, the union membership will vote on strike authorization this Sunday, June 29. This does not initiate a strike. It does empower the union leadership to call a work stoppage at any time beginning on July 1.”

MV sent us this statement:

RIDE’s contractor, MV Transportation (MV), and the union that represents its drivers, dispatchers and mechanics (Teamsters Local 533) have been in contract discussions since May. The existing labor agreement between MV and Local 533 expires on June 30th; however, MV has requested a 60 day extension of the current agreement while a new agreement is negotiated. MV continues to bargain in good faith with the union, and is committed to working together with Local 533 to come to a long-term agreement acceptable to both parties. MV and Local 533 are scheduled to meet in July to continue discussions. MV has not received any notification from Local 533 that they intend on striking, and we look forward to continued discussions over the coming weeks so as to achieve a successful resolution. RIDE service is currently operating on schedule.
