Tonkin Team to Take Part in World Fighting Championships

Posted: Updated:
It's fight week. The World Fighting Championships will present more than a dozen cage fights this weekend at the GSR, and some promising local fighters are on the ticket.

"Keep your hands up. I know you're tired, but keep your hands up!"

Meet the Tonkin fight team.

Matt Tonkin is their head trainer out of Charles Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Reno.

He says it takes it takes a lot of time and dedication to become a good mixed martial artist.

You also have to be well-versed in a variety of disciplines.

"To be a good martial artist, you have to be good at Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai boxing and wrestling. That's why I brought in the best coaches in the area."

Along with three black belt instructors and a four-time national boxing champ, Tonkin's solicited the help of strength and conditioning trainers, Carlos Madrid and JJ Milan.

The owners of Functional Athletic Sports Training - or FAST - are offering their time and expertise - free of charge - to get these athletes in fighting shape.
