WCSD Board of Trustees Hears Report on Emergency Management

From the Washoe County School District:

Washoe County Board of Trustees on Tuesday discussed the results of a comprehensive review of the District’s emergency training and response plan. The purpose of the external review, which was supported by Trustees in December 2013, was to ensure that the District is implementing best practices in preparing for any threat to the health and safety of its students and staff members.

The report concluded that the District should conduct emergency training for all employees, improve District-wide communications during an emergency event, and establish a clear chain of authority in case of an emergency.

WCSD has also established a Safe and Healthy Schools Commission which is tasked with advising the Board of Trustees on issues related to the safety and security of schools. The Commission will review best national models of practice that support student learning to foster a healthy school environment. This week, a link will be posted on the District website asking interested community members to apply to serve on the Commission.

“School safety is of paramount importance to our District, so the review of our safety practices and the establishment of this commission are important steps forward for us,” said President Clark. “We will continue to work hard to keep our schools, students, and staff members safe.”
