Researchers: 1/3 of NV Kindergartners Overweight

Posted: Updated:
Researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas say nearly one-third of the state's kindergartners are overweight or obese.

A report compiled by the Nevada Institute for Children's Research and Policy found 30 percent of the children in the study were overweight. That's a 1.4 percent increase from last school year.

The report is based on more than 7,000 surveys completed by parents in all of the state's 17 school districts.

The survey doesn't explain why the obesity rate ticked up, but did note that children are spending more time with video games and computers. Children showed healthier behaviors in other areas, including watching less TV and getting more physical activity.

Researchers tell the Las Vegas Sun (http://bit.ly/TtrCOM) they hope the report helps inform state policies related to childhood obesity.
