Crews Investigating Deadly House Fire in Sparks

Posted: Updated:
Investigators with the Sparks Fire Department says a deadly house fire Thursday night, was the result of improper use of smoking materials.

They say elderly woman died and her husband was hospitalized after crews responded to the fire just after 8
p.m. at a home on Shari Way.

They say when fire crews arrived, they found two people inside the home and brought them out, before dealing with the fire. An elderly man was found with a walker in the hallway of the home. REMSA transported the man to Renown Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The man was later flown to the UC Davis Burn Center in California for treatment.

Police say the second victim, an elderly woman, was found and unresponsive, inside of a bedroom that was filled with heat and smoke when crews arrived.

"A big haze of smoke." said Fire Marshal Bob King, "A lot of heat in the bedroom. Enough to even come down the hallway and melt a smoke detector that was sounding."

King says Sparks Fire and REMSA personnel tried to revive the woman, but were unsuccessful, and she died at the scene.

Investigators say the all indicators point to "improper use of smoking materials"  which ignited at the bottom-right corner of the bed inside the home. They say the bedroom contained very little fire on top of the bed, but had heavy smoke and heat damage throughout.

Officials say the fire was first reported by a neighbor that say smoke coming from the elderly couple's home. They say the neighbor had tried to go into the home to help but smoke and heat prevented them from entering.
