AP: Reno Motel Killing Suspect Previously Paroled for Murder

Posted: Updated:
A man who was arrested after police say he told them he killed a woman Sunday at a Reno motel had been released from prison in September after serving more than 20 years for the murder of his fiancee in southern Nevada.

A review of state records by The Associated Press shows the Nevada Board of Parole granted 61-year-old Zollie Edward Dumas parole last June 17 effective Sept. 1.

Reno police say Dumas was booked into the county jail on a parole violation Sunday after authorities say he told them he killed a woman at the Lucky Motel on East Fourth Street. Police say they were called there about noon on a report of a domestic dispute.

Dumas was convicted of the 1988 stabbing death of Angela Griffin of Henderson. The Nevada Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 1995 because his attorney failed to argue his limited mental capacity made it impossible for him to commit first-degree murder.

Dumas pleaded guilty in 1997 to second-degree murder and had been in prison for that crime until his release last fall.  (AP)
