Dorm Demolition Plans Draw Opposition

Posted: Updated:
Historic preservationists are objecting to redevelopment plans at the University of Nevada that could result in the demolition of a pair of dormitories built more than a century ago.

Lincoln and Manzanita halls are two of 13 buildings on the Reno campus that are part of an historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built in the 1890s, university officials are concerned the aging dorms don't meet modern construction standards for earthquake safety.

School officials want to tear down Lincoln Hall to make room for new student housing, and either turn Manzanita Hall into offices, or demolish it as well.

Reno historian Alicia Barber tells the Reno Gazette-Journal (http://tinyurl.com/p9j4lu6) the school shouldn't give up on the old buildings without hiring an expert to determine how much it would cost to retrofit them.
