Federal Ranger, CHP Officer Hurt in Shooting near Nevada City

NEVADA CITY, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a federal ranger and a California Highway Patrol officer were hurt in a shooting near a Northern California campground.

CHP Officer Greg Tassone says the shooting broke out in a rugged, remote area north of Nevada City on Saturday afternoon.

He says a CHP officer was responding to a Bureau of Land Management ranger's call for assistance when they encountered a gunman. A shootout ensued, and the ranger and the suspect were both struck by gunfire.

Both were flown to a suburban Sacramento hospital for treatment. BLM spokeswoman Dana Wilson says she didn't know the extent of the ranger's injuries.

The CHP officer suffered minor injuries. Tassone says he didn't know whether he was wounded by gunfire or from something else.
