Safety Watch: Staying Safe While Boating

Posted: Updated:
Sunday is Father’s Day and many Northern Nevadans are headed to the lake to spend the day with their dad, but when people are out on the water, how can they stay safe?

The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with the Coast Guard and several other agencies to hold ‘Operation Safe Boat,’ a boat inspection Saturday at Frenchman’s Lake.

“We’re basically looking for the required safety gear,” said Bryce Leinan with the U.S Coast Guard. “We are making sure they (boaters) have the correct number of life jackets on boats and the right type of jacket.”

It wasn’t just life jackets, but registration and even quagga mussels.

Once boaters are out on the lake, boaters are encouraged to pay particular attention to rocks and sand dunes specifically because the water levels are low.

Other tips include to let people know where you are boating and what time you will be back.

Mixing alcohol and boating is never a good idea, officials say.

“You’re just not going to be able to sufficiently drive your boat in a safe manner,” said Warren Cheney with Plumas County Sheriff’s Office. “Be aware that boating is dangerous.”

The U.S Coast Guard says they will be doing more voluntary boat inspections. Click here for a link to their website.
