Aces get Swept by Nashville

Posted: Updated:
The Aces were swept in the Music City as the Nashville Sounds used a seven-run first inning to top Reno, 12-6, Thursday night at Greer Stadium.

With the loss, the Aces were swept for the first time in 2014 and have lost five in a row, their longest losing streak of the season.

Lucas Harrell started for Reno and ran into trouble in the first inning. Jeff Bianchi led off the game with a line drive to center, and quickly came around to score when the number two hitter, Pete Orr, homered to right.

The next three hitters all collected hits. Jeremy Hermida doubled, Sean Halton singled in Hermida, and Caleb Gindl singled to put runners at first and second. Eugenio Velez followed with a three-run homer to make it 6-0.

The bleeding didn’t stop there as Kevin Mattison followed suit with a solo home run, making it back-to-back shots for the Sounds. Harrell retired the next three hitters in order but Nashville took a 7-0 lead to the second.

The Sounds added two more runs in the second inning, chasing Harrell. Justin Van Grouw relieved Harrell and threw three shutout innings for the Aces and collected his first professional hit, a single in the fifth inning.

Reno didn’t get on the board until the seventh inning when Nick Ahmed delivered a two-out, two-run single to make it 11-2. They added four more in the eighth, highlighted by Mike Freeman’s first Triple-A home run, a two-run shot to trim the lead to 12-6.

The Aces threatened in the ninth but Danny Dorn struck out with the bases loaded to end it. Freeman and Bobby Wilson each had three hits for Reno, and Ahmed had his 19th multi-hit game of the year.

The road trip continues Friday night in Memphis as the Aces take on the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, the Memphis Redbirds. Left-hander Andrew Chafin (1-1, 6.20) starts for Reno against Memphis right-hander Angel Castro (6-4, 3.50). First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 PST.
