From the Washoe County School District:

Students who comprise the inaugural class of graduates from North Star Online School will receive their diplomas at their graduation ceremony on Friday, June 13.

Fifty students will graduate in the Class of 2014, and five are juniors who are graduating one year early. Thirteen of the students are receiving advanced or honors diplomas.

“We are so proud of all of our students,” said Principal Katherine Hadley. “They have worked hard in their studies, some of them while confronting tremendous challenges in their lives. We honor their dedication to achieving this academic goal, and we know they are headed for great accomplishments in college and beyond.”

“I am so looking forward to presenting these students with their diplomas,” said Superintendent Pedro Martinez. “These students have showed initiative and drive, creativity and promise, and I am proud to see them take the next step in their academic journeys.”

The valedictorian for the Class of 2014 is Elissa Pavelea, who is also a champion tennis player. Salutatorian Lynn Warman has earned a black belt in Aikido martial arts. Mackenzie Rader is the top graduating junior in the class.

North Star Online School students take their courses online, but also may take classes and participate in sports and extracurricular activities at their zoned schools. Nearly 330 students from kindergarten through 12th grade attended North Star this semester.

Some students choose this educational option so they can take additional courses and graduate early, or pursue professions in sports, acting, modeling, art, and music. Some students attend online school because they are battling chronic illnesses, have lost loved ones during the school year, or need a different type of learning environment.

North Star online students pay no tuition, and the school is fully accredited by the State of Nevada. Teachers are available to provide support online or in person at the school. Any student who is interested in learning more about attending North Star Online School may visit or call (775) 353-6900.

The graduation ceremony for North Star Online School will take place at Lawlor Events Center on Friday, June 13, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
