New Ad Campaign Introduced to Bring in Business

There is another new advertising campaign to draw business to northern Nevada. The slogan is, ‘Expand your business, enjoy your life.” What does it mean? Reno Mayor Bob Cashell told us, "What your business can do here, and how you can enjoy your life when you're here." To Chris Baum of the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority, it says, “You can lure people to work for you, because of the great quality of life we have here.”

It’s a plan designed to perk up the interest of businesses contemplating a move, hopefully to here. And the sooner they get here the better. Baum told us, "Once Reno-Tahoe was number one in gaming, and we're number 16 now. So gaming's an amenity here, but it's not the primary focus anymore...it can't be."

So the focus for these new jobs has moved solidly to logistics and manufacturing. EDAWN’s Mike Kazmierski tells me 2 new businesses will announce their moves here next month…he says they’re big ones. This new ad campaign, which is already up at the convention center and soon to appear on billboards, hopes to add to that…drawing business owners to Reno's lifestyle. Kazmierski said the new slogan says, "While you're enjoying it, consider moving your business here or setting up an operation on the business side. It really tries to link the two."

And attracting businesses to a more wholesome lifestyle was the thinking behind EDAWN's taxi-top drive. For decades, Reno cabs primarily advertised brothels and strip clubs. Last September, EDAWN said they were going to change that. 9 months later, Kazmierski told us, "For the people in the community, it has helped them realize that we can make a change. What we were is not what we're going to be."

But has it changed things? We took a drive to the taxi cab holding area at the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Today, we found that brothels and strip clubs outnumber the family-friendly ads there by 4 to 3 ratio. But no one said the taxi top campaign would be easy. And after 9 months, there are some encouraging signs, as some unlikely businesses are taking notice. We met Laura Zander of Jimmy Beans Wool, who told us, "I think we're the only wool company in the world to be on top of a taxi cab." Laura says she just bought 10 taxi ads, to sell her wool: “I mean, that's the whole point, to put us up there instead."

From gaming, to diversification. From advertising brothels and strip clubs, to museums, hospitals...and wool on taxi cabs. All part of a changing Reno.
