Dead-Tree & Live-Tree Firewood Cutting Starts Monday

Posted: Updated:
From the U.S. Forest Service:

The Carson Ranger District, Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, will open dead-tree firewood cutting areas on June 16, 2014.  Dead-tree cutting areas include Hope Valley, Thornburg Canyon, and Leviathan.

Live-tree cutting areas will open on July 21, 2014; live-tree cutting areas include Beagle (Dog Valley area), Scotts Lake (south of Woodfords, CA), and Jones Creek (off Mt. Rose Highway).

In the live-tree cutting areas, only designated trees may be cut and slash must be piled.  Designated trees are described on the live-tree cutting area maps.

Please season firewood from the live-tree cutting areas for at least six months prior to burning.  This will reduce air pollution and maximize the heat value of the firewood.

Firewood permits are valid through November 15, 2014, the cost is $15 per cord, and there is a 2-cord minimum with a 6-cord maximum per household per year.

A fire extinguisher and a shovel are required when using a chainsaw for cutting firewood.  Due to extremely dry conditions, “Hoot-Owl” restrictions will be effect until further notice; all chainsaw use must be stopped by 1:00 p.m.

Permits with maps of cutting areas may be purchased at the following locations:
