Nevada state Sen. Mark Hutchison has won the Republican primary for lieutenant governor in a divisive contest with ex-state lawmaker and one-time U.S. Senate hopeful Sue Lowden.

Hutchison advances to the November election against Democrat Lucy Flores, a state assemblywoman from Las Vegas who cruised to victory in her primary Tuesday night.

Hutchison, a first-term senator and wealthy lawyer from Las Vegas, had the backing of Gov. Brian Sandoval.

Lowden lost the 2010 GOP primary for the U.S. Senate to tea party conservative Sharron Angle, who went on to lose to Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Hutchison's campaign ads attacked Lowden for making contributions to Reid's re-election campaigns in the 1980s.  (AP)

State Senator Mark Hutchison, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor issued the following statement after the announcement of Nevada primary election results.

“Thank you to my family, my supporters, and the thousands of Nevadans who voted for me this evening. It was a hard fought primary, but tonight Republicans from across Nevada responded to our vision of economic prosperity, increased opportunities, and the continuation of Nevada’s Comeback. I thank my opponents, Sue Lowden and Chris Dyer and their supporters for a spirited race,” said Mark Hutchison, Republican nominee for lieutenant governor. “I look forward to continuing my All Nevada campaign across the Silver State and will focus on meeting with and learning from voters wherever they live and work. It was my privilege to have Governor Sandoval’s endorsement and full support in this primary election. I feel honored to run on the GOP ticket that he leads. Under the leadership of Governor Sandoval, I am confident that we will win races up and down the ticket in November.”

Governor Brian Sandoval issued this statement following reports that Mark Hutchison secured the Republican nomination for Lt. Governor:

"Congratulations to Mark Hutchison for earning the support of Republicans across Nevada.  The race for lieutenant governor was spirited and as we move towards the general election I look forward to campaigning with Mark.  Nevada needs a lieutenant governor who will help grow and diversify our economy and build upon the improvements in our education system – that candidate is Mark Hutchison," said Governor Brian Sandoval.
