U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford Wins Democratic Primary

Posted: Updated:
U.S. Rep. Steven Horsford has defeated two Democratic challengers in a primary election victory for the 4th Congressional District.

The state's first black U.S. representative topped two little-known Democrats in the sprawling district that includes urban North Las Vegas as well as vast stretches of rural Nevada.

The well-funded Democratic incumbent awaits the winner of a close Republican primary contest between establishment-backed Cresent Hardy, tea party strategist Niger Innis and two other candidates.

Innis and Hardy had raised nearly identical amounts of money ahead of Tuesday's contest, and had tried to bolster their conservative credentials during four debates.

Hardy is a two-term state assemblyman from Mesquite and a fifth-generation Nevadan.

Innis, who is black, is a national spokesman for the Congress on Racial Equality.  (AP)

Today, Representative Steven Horsford (NV-4) released the following statement after declaring victory as the Democrat in Nevada’s 4th Congressional District Primary Election:

“My family, Sonya and I are grateful for and humbled by the strong showing of support we've received from our neighbors, friends, and constituents in Nevada's 4th Congressional District tonight.

“After a year and a half on the job, I am under no illusion that making Washington work is easy. But I am also not disillusioned. With hard work, we can make a difference in the lives of working Nevadans who need someone to stand by their side. I will continue to fight for the middle-class families of Nevada, to serve our veterans as they served our country, and to work with anyone from any party who genuinely wants to improve our state and our nation.

“It has been an honor to serve constituents in one of the largest and most diverse districts in the country: from Hawthorne to Ely, from Pahrump to North Las Vegas to Mesquite, and everywhere in between. With hard work we have helped veterans in the district get thousands of dollars in due backlogged VA benefits, halted unwarranted deportations and reunited families, and secured investments in rural education and health care funding.

“Now that the primary is behind us, I welcome the opportunity to reach out to all the voters in Nevada's 4th, regardless of party, to share our vision for creating jobs, growing the economy and expanding economic opportunity for all Nevadans."
