Voters Trickle in for a Light Primary Day Turnout

Posted: Updated:

Political parties and candidates put a lot of work into this year's campaigns, but did their excitement catch on with the voting public? Not from where the poll workers sat today.

In the middle of a quiet, empty auditorium at Marvin Moss Elementary School today, Washoe County election worker Mary Kay Waller found plenty of time to work on her project: knitting a blanket. As she told us, "It's a lap blanket, it might be finished by the end of primary voting day. Today's a little slow."

Yes, the way it looked this morning, she could've knitted each candidate a blanket. Amidst all the quiet periods in this polling place, knitting and crossword puzzles were what election workers were working on this election day. This primary election may actually go down in history, and not in a relatively good way. It could have the lowest turnout of any election day in Nevada's history.

Poll worker Lois LeFebvre has been working elections for 18 years now. This...isn't much of one. How much of a turnout was she predicting? "I'm going to say...maybe 10%. It’s a slow election, plus early voting takes a lot away from traditional election days."

But some folks, like Shaun Riddle, wouldn't miss it for the world. After casting his vote, Riddle told us, "I'm kind of political. I follow the races a lot, and I think every election's important."

But multitudes stayed away...which made Terry Callahan's vote on this day the easiest one yet...for no one in particular. She told us she came out “just to vote in general. I think it's important to continue to vote every time we have an election."

No presidential candidates this time, no contest for U.S. senator...a pretty empty ticket. Voters today talked more about civic duty than they did the candidates. Larry Demangate was one of them. He told us, “I think we have these privileges and freedoms and we should seize them at every opportunity."

Larry comes from a time when coming out to cast your vote, even in minor primaries like this one, is just part of what you do as a citizen.

Across town at the Livestock Events Center, the size of the events hall dwarfed the few who turned out even more...so we couldn't miss Cordy Velarde. She told us, “I vote every primary. No matter what, I'm here!"

Cordy was fired up about one candidate…we didn't pry to find out who. But it did bother her that more people didn't join her. It bothered poll worker Pat Zimmerman too. Her message to those who skipped out? "You can't complain if you don't vote. You have nothing to say."
