Many Close Races Remain One Week After California Primary

Posted: Updated:
One week after California's statewide primary election, the outcomes in several contests remain up in the air, including the race for state controller.
Fresno Mayor Ashley Swearengin, a Republican, sealed the top spot in the controller's contest but does not yet know which candidate she will face in November. Two Democrats, former Assembly Speaker John Perez and Board of Equalization member Betty Yee, are jockeying for second place.
Under California's new primary system, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election, regardless of party.
County clerks estimate that as many as 792,000 ballots remain uncounted, including about 148,000 in Los Angeles County.
The challengers for four U.S. House races and up to five legislative races are still not known, according to reports filed with the secretary of state's office.   (AP)
