Locals Beat the Heat Indoors and Out

Posted: Updated:
People are definitely feeling the heat this week, and staying cool is becoming a priority-- whether you're indoors or outside.

Lucas Harris of Carter Bros. Ace Hardware in Reno says electric fans are economical and effective. “A window fan, the box fans. You reverse it in the window. It pulls out all the hot air," Harris explained. Fans can cost from $10 for a personal fan to more around $50 for a box fan. Other fans can cost more than $100. That’s still not as much as a window air conditioning unit. Harris also points customers to misters, which keep you cool outside and hook up to a garden hose.

If you can't keep your house or apartment cool, there's always a local park with shade or water, which won't cost you anything. Angie Geisinger was staying cool at Wingfield Park on Monday with her friend Mariusz Debski. "We actually meant to go to the pool today but the pool was closed so we decided to come down here.” she said. “The water feels wonderful,” she added. Debski, who is originally from Poland enjoys the hot Reno weather. "Go to the shade, drink water,” he said. “What can you do? Nothing, you know. It's weather,” he chuckled.

Whether you’re trying to beat the heat inside or out, experts say be sure to drink plenty of water and remember to keep your pets cool too.
