School Calendar Impacts Summer Business

Posted: Updated:
With hot weather like we have been seeing lately, summer vacation from school may come to mind. However, in Washoe County, the school year doesn’t end until Friday which means area businesses and camps are adjusting.

“That’s what businesses do,” said Wild Island General Manager Scott Carothers. “They adjust.”

Wild Island Family Adventure Park has seen a lot of change starting last fall when the Washoe County School District changed their calendar. They have been operating half days during the weekdays for a few reasons.

First, there is not a lot of clientele. Secondly, “We’re hovering right now around 360 employees,” he said. “I’d say 85% of those are part of the Washoe County School District.”

At the Boys & Girls Club of the Truckee Meadows, Executive Director Mike Wurm was concerned that staff members, who are mostly in school themselves, couldn’t work around the new calendar. However, that is not the case today. “It has worked out fine for us,” said Wurm. “We’ve made the adjustment and I think we felt at the end of last summer we had a better product because the staff were not so burnt out.”

The school district will look at changing the schedule next year, which could mean more change. “As of now, we would like to see this schedule continue to stay,” said Wurm.

“No,” said Carothers. “The calendar is too short in the summer. I think they could add one more week to the summer and find a really happy compromise there.”
