El Dorado County, California deputies need your help finding a missing 23-year-old man last heard from on Friday, June 6 in the Ice House area near Desolation Wilderness.

Deputies say they received a call Saturday night from Vernon "Cody" Mathews' parents advising they were concerned about his safety. Mathews had been dropped off at the family cabin in the Ice House area on Wednesday, June 4th. His mother spoke to him by phone two days later just before he went on a hike. Mathews has not been heard from since.

Deputies responded to the cabin in the Ice House area on Saturday and started an investigation. Mathews was staying at the cabin by himself and has no vehicle; his personal belongings are still inside the cabin.

They say he knows the area very well and is an avid hiker and climber.

Mathews is described as 6'3" and about 160-220 pounds. He has shoulder length strawberry blond hair and a full red beard. It's not known what clothing he is wearing.

Deputies say there is no indication of foul play, however, Mathews' cell phone has not been used since last Friday.

Search and Rescue teams from Placer, Nevada, Sacramento and Douglas Counties are currently assisting in the search. Canine units, horse mounted units, off-road vehicle units and ground units are being utilized. The U.S. Forest Service has vehicle patrol units searching the area and the California Highway Patrol is searching the area with the use of aircraft.

If you have any information on his whereabouts, call El Dorado County Sheriff's dispatch center at 530-621-6600.
