Washoe County Sheriff Candidate Meet-and-Greet Held in Reno

Posted: Updated:
Maccabee Arms Ltd. held a meet-and-greet with Washoe County Sheriff candidates on Monday, one day ahead of Nevada’s primary election.

We asked them - why do they want to be the next sheriff - and what would they change if elected.

"I am the only candidate not from the agency, coming in with new perspective, new ideas, with a fresh set of eyes, and its all about leadership," says Chuck Allen.

James Beltron adds, "I believe in taking care of your personnel, and that's all of them. Not just the deputies, the civilians as well, making sure that it's a more harmonious work environment."

"I want to increase communication. I want to increase the level between top management and the line staff. Right now I believe there's a little bit of a vacuum there that we need to correct," says David Butko.

Jim Lopey adds, "There's a leadership vacuum, talking with dozens of employees up at the sheriff's office, we need new leadership, direction, and transformation."

Conversation topics at today's event ranged from balancing the budget to community engagement to second amendment rights. Every candidate has decades of law enforcement experience and most said that was what made them most qualified for the office of sheriff.

We spoke with the fifth candidate - Tim Kuzanek - to find out why he didn't attend the event today. He told us he had already committed to another event during that time.
