3 Wolf Pack Players Taken in Day 3 of the MLB Draft

Posted: Updated:
University of Nevada junior pitchers Jordan Dunatov, Colby Blueberg and Tyler Wells were all selected on the final day of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft Saturday. The three join junior first baseman Austin Byler who was drafted on Friday in the ninth round by the Washington Nationals to give the Wolf Pack four players that were selected from a team that went 31-27 this past season.  The juniors could opt to not sign and return for their senior seasons in 2015.

Dunatov was selected as a pitcher in the 12th round with the 368th overall pick by the Cleveland Indians.  The 6-6 right hander saw limited action on the mound in his first season at Nevada pitching 3.1 innings in six appearances to post a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA.  A native of Phoenix, Ariz. he also played in the outfield and saw time at designated hitter appearing in 16 games with four starts for the Pack.  He batted .118 with three runs scored and drove in one.

A second-team All-Mountain West reliever Blueberg was drafted in the 24th round with the overall 717th pick by the San Diego Padres.  The Carson City, Nev. native set the school record with 35 appearances and his 1.22 ERA is the lowest in a season at Nevada.  Former MLB pitcher Ed Plank held the ERA record of 1.79 set back in 1973.  Blueberg’s 79 career appearances are third most in Wolf Pack history.

This past season Blueberg was 4-2 with two saves in a MW high 35 appearance.  The 35 appearances currently ranks 11th nationally.  He struck out 46 while walking just 17 in 51.2 innings on the mound.

The lefty Wells was selected in the 25th round with 757th overall pick by the Tampa Bay Rays today.  He made 18 appearances with nine starts in his junior season and tossed one complete game.  A native of Maxwell, Calif.  posted a 1-4 record with a 4.56 ERA and struck out 41 with 20 strikeouts in 47.1 innings.
