Sen. Reid Calls "Shady Money" Threat to Democracy

Posted: Updated:
The Senate's top Democrat says the free flow of what he calls "shady money" into politics is the biggest threat to democracy he's seen in his lifetime. But his Republican counterpart calls efforts to limit campaign spending "terrible policy."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Tuesday spoke to the Democratic-led Senate Judiciary Committee in support of a constitutional amendment to limit deep-pocketed campaign donors. Sitting next to him, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell says the effort to change the Constitution is an effort to "stir up one party's political base so they'll show up in November."

Changing the Constitution is an intentionally difficult process and the panel's efforts are likely to be little more than election-year posturing. Democrats have seized on the issue as a winning one.
